Opened by Dublin City Council in 1986 the Bull Island Interpretative
Centre assists in the understanding of the unique flora and fauna and
specialised habitats of the surrounding sand dunes and salt marshes.
Declared an UNESCO Biosphere in 1981 and a National Nature Reserve in 1988, the island supports a huge variety of wading birds, many of them migratory. The birds include little terns, curlews, oystercatchers, herring gulls, lapwings, dunlins, redshanks and wintering Brent geese all the way from Arctic Canada. Thousands of ducks, including widgeon, shelduck and mallard enjoy the rich tidal feeding grounds.
