Dublin's City Hall: The Story of the Capital
Dublin's City Hall: The Story of the Capital is a multimedia exhibition about Dubiln's history and development through the ages.

The Exhibition tells the story of the development of the River Liffey, the Freedom and Merchant Guilds Rolls of the City, the development of City Government, links between Dublin and the rest of the world, and explores the development of City Transport. City artefacts, audiovisual presentations, graphic displays, and interactive kiosks take visitors through The Emergence of Civic Administration, Dublin's Golden Age: Past and Present, and The Modern Age of Dublin.

The City Hall itself is a terrific example of 18th century architecture. Today it is the venue for meetings of the municipal governing body, the Dublin City Council, as well as a major tourist attraction. City Hall was originally the Royal Exchange, which was built between 1769 and 1779 by the Dublin Guild of Merchants as a business centre, at a cost of £58,000. The architect was Thomas Cooley, the winner of a competition to design the building. In 1852, Dublin Corporation acquired the Royal Exchange for its new headquarters and embarked on a programme of alterations designed to create much needed office space. The City Hall was fully restored again for the Millenium celebrations.

Dublin City Council meets in plenary session on the first Monday of each month in the historic Council Chamber, originally the Coffee Room of the Royal Exchange. The Lord Mayor of Dublin presides at meetings of the City Council, which the public may attend by prior arrangement, and the various committees of the City Council meet almost every day in the Member's Room to make decisions affecting all aspects of civic administration.
