Part of the Georges St. Arcade, the Asia Market on Drury St. is an
underground treasure trove of inexpensive food ingredients for Asian
cuisine.
You walk to the back of the shop and turn right down into the basement. They stock bulk quantities of rice, olive oil, herbs, curry paste and the like. Massive bags of dried chillis, kidney beans and cashew nuts line the floor underneath the shelves stocking tins of soups and sauces that the Irish consumer will never have heard of. Frozen shrimp and prawn and calamari crowd the freezers. I think the starting point to cooking a decent Thai, Japanese or Chinese meal begins with assembling authentic ingredients here and not wasting your time by scrabbling around in one of our chain supermarkets. All kinds of cooking utensils are sold here too including woks, pans and strainers. Around the corner, the Oriental Emporium on Georges St. also stocks some interestingly exotic foodstuffs. Both of these shops would do the bulk of their business to the Dublin Asian community and the Market remains one of Dublin's best-kept secrets.
Opening Hours: Mon-Sat 10am-7pm
