National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology and History
The National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology and History displays many beautiful artefacts from Ireland's history.

The National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology and History houses the most wonderful array of historical artefacts dating from 7000BC to the 20th Century, including the Ardagh Chalice, the Tara Brooch and the Derrynaflan hoard.

Located on Kildare Street next to Leinster House and the National Library, The National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology and History is a richly decorated Museum designed by Thomas Newenham Deane and Thomas Manly Deane in the 19th century with mosaics and motifs recalling the civilisations of Greece and Rome.

As you enter the museum you will encounter a marvellous domed rotunda with classical columns of Irish marble leading you to the reception and the museum's café and shop.

On the ground floor you can explore the tools and weapons of Prehistoric Ireland, a fascinating collection of gold jewellery including torcs, collar, ear-spools and lock rings in Or - Ireland's Gold, trace the development of Irish art from the arrival of the Celts to the Medieval Period with The Treasury and find out about the rise of Irish nationalism in The Road to Independence.

As you ascend the stairs to the first floor, you will discover Viking coins, silks and weapons alongside a slave chain and the Cross of Cong in Viking Ireland. In the recently opened Medieval Ireland, you can explore life in Ireland from the Anglo-Norman invasion of the 12th century to the Reformation with three different galleries, "Power", "Work" and "Prayer".

Ancient Egypt presents artefacts that portray life, death and religious practises in Ancient Egypt over five millennia with mummies, jewellery and cosmetics. And finally we come to my favourite part of the Museum collection, X10 Years Collecting featuring a beguiling host of archaeological discoveries made by people from all over Ireland from 1990 to 1999.

With Temporary Exhibitions, Guided Tours, an Education Resource Room and an excellent Education and Outreach programme, the National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology & History is a recreational and educational way to explore Ireland's rich heritage.
